My computer hardware, circa 2024

I just did some rearranging of hardware on my home machine, and wanted to document some of those changes and the reasons for them, as well as to update the hardware list below for "trona".

In maybe 2020 I abandoned (for no good reason) my Gigabyte G1 Sniper 3, replacing it with an Asus P8Z77-V like the board that runs "cholla" at the university. In December of 2024 my system was exhibiting some flakey issues. One was that my main spinning drive (u1) was reporting bad sectors. I bought a replacement and decided this was the time to install it. Things were flakey even during the replacement. This led me to switching back to the Gigabyte board, which frankly is a significantly higher quality board. I also downloaded memtest86 and by running it determined that the first pair (16G) of ram sticks is giving errors. The second pair seem fine, so I am using them, running on 16G only, and have ordered a pair of replacements (for less than $20).

I had to use a USB sound dongle with the Asus board. The Gigabyte board has sound that works and is much better than the dongle, so I am enjoying that. When I first got the Gigabyte board, there was no linux support for the sound on the board. The Asus board had some pretty terrible RAM sockets -- the Gigabyte is much better.

These are all LGA 1155 boards. I am still using the fan and heat sink that came with the chip from Intel, but I wonder about it after this much time. It was a bit of a trick transfering it from the Asus back to the Gigabyte as the plastic inserts are getting old and brittle. Maybe a cooler upgrade is in order:

I lean towards the Noctua. The Cooler Master (CM) is a top recommendation, but probably overkill. There are a myriad of choices.

There are more details on these motherboards at the following link:
