I was so happy with my Arizona TOPO! set that I went ahead and got the set for California. This is TOPO! version 2.7.6 and came out in 2002. It consists of 10 CD's (amazing that it only takes 2 additional CD's compared to Arizona, I thought that California was bigger.
I am copying more of these CD's to my home computer.
I used to only keep selected CD's
on my hard drive, (namely CD 1,6, and 8),
but hard drives are big and cheap these days, so
there is hardly a reason not to keep it all handy.
What I do is:
mount /dev/cdrom /mnt cp -var /mnt/CA_D01 /u1/topoThis gives me /u1/topo/CA_D01 on my hard drive. There is other stuff on this first CD, but I ignore it.
Subsequent CD's contain only the directory CA_D02 and so forth.
